Insurance

I rang round everywhere and it was a bloody nightmare. The problem you see is that the Bozo on the end of the phone insists on asking you 20 minutes worth of questions before asking you what car you want to insure. When you tell him it is an "LTI fairway driver plus" he will have a mental breakdown because it isn't listed on his computer. Then you will be put on hold, and bounced around all over the place before being told " Sorry, we don't do taxis" The solution is simple though.. ring an insurance broker, they contact hundreds of insurers and find one who will cover you. I did it all through the AA and got 2 named drivers fully comprehensive living in SE15 for £280 a year.

UPDATE - My insurance expired and the AA could no longer give me cover, but using the advice of a poster to this site, I contacted the classic car department at Peter Best Insurance, who were very helpful and gave me a quote almost identical to my last one, with lots of extras. If you are having trouble, give them a try...

Also, look through the comments left by other users (below) - lots of useful info there...

Known insurers are:

Tesco
Peter Best on 01376 573033
NFU Mutual
CIS - The Co-Op
Adrian Flux on 0800 505 3000
Footman James on 0844 826 8997

  2. Just ring the AA on 0870 533 2211. You could also try Norwich Union Insurance - sorry don't have a number for them.

  3. As I remember, Norwich are real pains about this and they only insure certain years of Taxi, despite them really being all the same.

    Tesco insure them, too.

  4. I said I'd feed back on my insurance search in another comments box. I got my insurance through the AA, it's actually with Norwich Union, for under £300.

I was also quoted under £400 through Footman James.

    Hope this helps.

P.s. the quote was for a Fairway Driver 92 plate.

  5. Thanks for your accessible and fun blog. Re insurance-Tesco wouldn't quote and Norwich left me waiting on the phone until I got tired. Got a quote from AA who said they had only one source so no comparison available. £358 fully comp with max no claims for N10 North London.

  6. I recommend Privilege on08000510650 who will give a direct quote. AA qouted £380 comp and Privilege £250

    2. is it 275 .60 each month you have to pay ? or was that fuly comp

    3. I contacted privilege a few months ago to insure my 1996 fairway. The guy had to go and see his supervisor and they seemed really suspicious of why I wanted to ensure a black cab and told me that they will only insure it if I removed everything that designated it as being an ex-London cab; including the hire a sign on the roof. I used another insurer instead!

  8. i phoned the broker my motorbike is insured with, H and R, they said i didnt have a hope in hell

i tryed the aa who put me thorough to the people who do proper taxi insurance, and they said they could do it but didnt bother quoting me cos it was gona be over 2 grand

im gona try tescos now, then give up

  9. my taxi dream is over,

off hand some of them didnt take any details before asking me what car

    H and R said--------we dont do it
    AA said-------------we dont do it
    tescos said---------we dont do it
norwidch union said- we dont do it
someone norwidch union put me throuhg said----------------we dont do it
the co-op said -----we dont do it
someone the co-op put me through to said----------------we dont do it

so im left with a quote without any of my details of over 2 grand, before i even told them i work in a really high insurance bracket job

  10. joe - don't give up! I got a quote of £355 from direct line of all people but you need to be patient and get a decent operator. I was on hold for a fair while but he managed to find a policy for:

    Make: LTI
Model: Fairway 2170 (I think) - they had an engine size of 2170cc or whatever the number was (but not 2700) but the underwriters agreed to go for it witha note stating that the cover was for the right vehicle.

Good luck. I'm going to try footman james and lancaster too - I think they both to classic car insurance so may be helpful.

    ReplyDelete
  11. more info: the AA bombed me out first time, but then I tried again and explained that they already insured LTI cabs (yours, DIS!) and they put me through to the classic car dep't who were much more helpful. They have the vehicle listed as "Carbodies Taxi" with a 2.7 engine and quoted me £540 - more than direct line but good to have another quote. Hope that helps.

    ReplyDelete
  12. just got quote from Footman James - they understood which vehicle straight away no bother (I think they have it listed as a Carbodies Fairway rather than LTI) - not as good at £401 but did include lots of breakdown cover. Looking promising.

  13. i tried footman james, unisurable

then i tried them totally lieing and said i was 25 with 2 years no clames

im actully 23 and a new to driving cars, im a biker

even with that, it said sorry cant quote you, phone us up, which means it will be thousends of quid

im buying a 10 yeah old vauxhall corsa 1.2 on monday for £900 to get some no clames

even that, the cheapest quote i can get 1150 of my english pounds, do people now understand why so manny young people dont bother with insurance, its prohibitivly expensive, but alas, i need a car for work :(

ill be back, give it a few years and i WILL have my taxi

so if anyone is intrested there is a 1996 manual (what i want) taxi on ebay in good nick for 1750 squid

  15. Tescos insure them(I know because thats who mine is with) it's pointless trying online because fairway doesn't come up on the computers which they all rely on.Carbodies might on some but if not just keep trying, make sure they know the vehicle is as it left the factory (ie no turbo or extra seats) and you'll be OK.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just been told by AA that Norwich Union are no longer going to renew my cover. Been knocked back by tesco, nfu, co-op as well, starting to run out of options! Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  17. That's scary. My insurance with the AA expires soon, and i don't want to have to fart around all day finding an alternative.. Can't suggest anything other than reading through the other visitors comments here and calling them all again...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I just had my renewal from Tesco.Still cheap.I think you have to be patient, explain thet it is unmodified, exactly as it left the factory. If they don't list carbodies as the maker, try LTI.
Explain the vehicle does not have a seat in the front and the taxi equipment has been removed so it cannot ever be used as a taxi.
    Don't give up!!.

  19. Thanks dis and 'load of squit', have managed to get cover from peter best through their classic car dept. Came to £293 so not bad and service was pretty straightforward. Its listed as a LTI Freeway Driver.

  21. I wonder if anyone has bought one to ue for business use. i use mine for my business which is dog walking, so i use the cab to pick the dogs up and take them on a walk. getting insured was an absolute nightmare. its bad enough for personal use, but when you tell people you want it for business they usually burst into tears!
I managed to get it insured last year through Advance insurance brokers, who were actually really helpfull, but the quote they gave me was £1800. unfortunately it was the only quote i actually got in 2 days of solid trying, so i had to take it. im now having the same problems this year, just to try and get something better than my renewal quote, of £1350!!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. The AA have now stopped insuring me because they have been unable to find an alternative quotation due to my vehicle being "unmapped".

  24. Mine is insured with Direct Line, no problem, like the writer above, you have to wait for them to go off & check!

The cost is the best I've ever had and they have given me fully comp for the same price as Adrian Flux gave me for third party. Just under the £400 per year. Not bad.

  26. I've just spent 3 days on the phone and whilst most mainstream insurers gave a flat refusal, I did manage to get some quotes (and the purchase of a Fairway was/is hanging on the insurance) including a heart-stopping £950+ from the AA classic car dept.

FYI, the two best were Direct Line for £420 (completely unfazed at the mention of 'Carbodies Fairway') and the one I'm probably going to go for, £376 from Peter Best Classic Car dept, which includes Roadside Assistance & Homesdtart from the RAC plus European driving cover for 30 days(I think it's that, my writing is a bit straggly by this point).

Call Peter Best on 01376 573033 - Chin up everyone, there IS hope out there!

  27. I, too, have been spending time on the 'phone looking for insurance for a P-reg Fairway Driver. I live in South-East London, and the car will be parked on the street outside my house, so it's quite challenging, even though I'm 38 have 5 years no claims bonus.

Adrian Flux and Direct Line weren't bad, but a little pricy. Adrian Flux were the only people to offer 3rd party insurance. Direct Line currently have a "first 52 days free" promotion. They did offer cover against vandalism and uninsured drivers, both of which might be handy in London.

Peter Best were very helpful, but couldn't find a quote for on-street parking. I think they've been getting a lot of trade from this blog recently. They said they were trying to get more people to underwrite Fairways because of the increased interest.

In the end, I went with Footman James (0845 458 4356). They offer UK & European breakdown cover included in the cost, and 35 days of European driving.

    ReplyDelete
  28. My quote from Peter Best was for on-street parking also, but maybe a sleepy Midlands town is less risky than London.

As of 4pm today, I'm now the proud owner of a Fairway. So exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I take back everything I said about Footman James.

I've just got a letter saying that I have "incorrectly benefited from a reduced premium". I'm still covered, which is nice, but if I have to change the policy they will charge me the correct price.

I've just moved house, so now I have to pay the correct premium. Which is 50 quid more, plus admin fees. Incompetent *and* expensive. Not a good combination.

On the plus side, I'm loving the Fairway.

  35. Hi, spent all day last Saturday on the internet and phone trying to get a quote. What a nightmare!No-one wanted to know including CIS who covered my last taxi 4 years ago. 'We don't do black cabs anymore', was the answer I got several times, AA classic was one of those. The only company that would give me a quote was Tesco. It wasn't on their computers and I had to explain that it's not a working taxi anymore, but the very helpful lady contacted their underwriters who said 'that's fine, just put it on as Carbodies Fairway'. I was quoted £340 fully comp. The downside is having to pay in one lump sum as they wouldn't do instalments. Phoned Peter Best this morning and they were truly brilliant. they've beaten the Tesco quote by £36 and I can pay monthly. Collect my Fairway tomorrow, can't wait to do the school runs! Sophie

  36. Hello, Spent 3 days on this, trying to get a quote for a Metrocab. All the main companies were a waste of time including the likes of Adrian Flux and Footman James on price and customer service.

Swinton specialist came up with the cheapest quote but Peter Best couldn't do enough and were very knowledgable. Swinton quote 24 hours, PB 5 minutes!

All in vain as my missus took to the idea and put in some extra dosh in so we got a fairway instead!

Process restarts tomorrow. Tried AA classics online so far and got 350 quoted but no breakdown cover (bit odd from AA!) which the other two above included.

I've just bought a one-owner P-reg (97) Fairway with "200,000" (stuck there) on the clock. It was in trade till last week (Nov 2011). Was a bit concerned re insurance (currently drive Volvo 440 cost £186 comp from Direct Line) - so I phoned around:
Pete Best= £362 (full comp), £200 excess, 5000 mile annual limit, NO advertising own business, MUST physically remove Taxi sign.
    ... hmm a bit restricitive.
Adrian Flux = £560 (3PTF), £860(fully comp) - fewer restrictions (miles, signage, taxi lamp) - but still a bit pricy.
DirectLine (current insurers) - No problem, $43 on top of existing (£186) premium, then about £230 yr (comp) from next August (renewal date). no restrictions on sineage, taxi sign - 8,000 miles/yr.
As mentioned in other posts all the others I tried either didn't know what I was talking about or had stopped doing cover for FX4s and Fairways.
I think DirectLine have it listed under "Carbodies Fairway".
A no-brainer. It took them less than 5 mins over the phone.

Hi there, Recently purchased myself a L reg Fairway, I phoned direct Line as the wife has her Landy insured with them so i get 2 policy discount, they did have it listed under carbodies and said no problem all i had to do was confirm to the underwriters (via phone the agent put me through) that it would not be used as a taxi. No restrictions and £260 a year so brill! Let the adventure begin, firsgt job is to sort out the not working front heater as its a bit chilly!!

I am about to take ownership of a gorgeous London black cab, and as I'm in the same boat as everyone else, I have this morning been phoning around for insurance quotes. I rang A-Plan first (who wouldn't want a quote of under £300 right?)Anyway to cut a long story short, they said no. They were aware of this blog (Go Guys!)and were grateful for the "big-up" (his words not mine)however they are only willing to quotes for true classics ie 80's.
As I am using this as a car to get my disabled grandmother about I'm now on the phone to Fish Insurance, who reassure me that their quote will be high.....the saga continues

A friend an I bought a Fairway 95, for a bit of fun and to take the families on road trips.

We know that the previous owners had 4 people on the poicy and were charged £137.00 in Aug 2010.
We have had quotes at £280. and £2250.00 from Peter Best (where did that come from ?). I am finding that you have to be specific on the information given, as a lot of the companies cannot find the vehicle on their computers.
We shall carry on the search, however, its a pain and it takes away from what should be a lot of fun.

  61. I'm 21 and have been searching around for Fairway insurance for years now. I think when I was 18 the cheapest quote I received was from Aviva, at £3200. That was their polite way of saying 'we'd rather not insure you'.

Now I'm 21, I shopped around again and found that all the classic insurance companies (Flux, Pete Best, FJ, PJ e.t.c.) knew exactly what the car was, but was unable to insure me until I was 25. Reason being the 2.7L engine. Underwriters don't take into consideration that the Fairway takes a lunar month to get to 70mph... My father is insured with Pete Best, and pays less than £200 a year.

I have been given two quotes from both Aviva and Direct Line, at just over £1000. At the beginning of each call, the operator is wary of the car, but when they go to the underwriters they realise they can indeed insure it.
