Why use a London Taxi as a family car ?

They are large virtually indestructible vehicles
They are easily one of the safest cars on the road
They are built on a solid chassis
They can carry huge amounts of shopping
They can carry up to seven persons
They are ideal school runs vehicles
They sit up high and give a fantastic command of the road
They give a sense of invincibility
They easily accept the largest push-chairs
Other drivers keep clear of taxis
They are simple to drive & easy to service
They have loads of street cred
The division window can close off noisy kids
They can do over 30 miles to a diesel gallon
They are cheap to insure being group 4 (low)
Parts are not expensive
They can be hosed out after dogs and kids
They look great with graphics and artwork
They are good business tools

In short an ex-London taxi is the ideal people carrier tried tested and proven on the streets of London and really good value against the cost of a purpose built MPV which can cost between £10,000-£20,000. The taxis represents tremendous value at an average budget cost of between £1500-£3000.

  1. Hi,

I think your blog is fab - it's tipped me over the edge towards buying a taxi, esp as I've just finished getting my biodiesel rig running.

We have a 9 month old daughter so will need to fit a baby seat - do you see any problem or is it just the same as in the rear seat of a conventional car?

    cheers

    Fletch

  2. Try and find one with as little rust on the door/boot bottoms as possible, mine are showings signs of rot and are probably quite costly to sort out or replace. As for baby seat, my kids are in the bigger child seats now, and they strap in just like any other. If you want to be sure, grab the seat and hail a cab... give it a go. Good luck and let me know how you get on..

I have been working as a mechanic on these vehicles for many years and have access to almost all new and used parts.

  7. How's the room for the driver? I've been told it can be a bit cramped..

  8. If you are 6ft or more they are quite cramped and the division restricts seat movement

  11. Hello from Alabama! I think I am the only person to own a London Taxi in the whole state. I love my 2004 LTI. It was a much better purchase than an SUV. The turning radius is great and the watching all the double-takes as I drive around is hilarious. Puts a smile on my face during my commute, what could be better than that?

  12. Hi Ref insurance from Footman James, I recently bought Fairways and F J NO LONGER insure them a long with many "classic cars" unless they are 30 years old or older. I got a great quote from NFU, Julian on Isle of Skye

  13. I think you're right. I live in Austin Texas, and my 2008 7 person minivan weighs 1000 lbs more than my 1967 Austin FX4, and will probably get about half as far with it's 3.5l engine. I got my cab a week ago, and am intrigued by the idea of using it as a daily driver. Especially since it has no AC, and it's 30 degrees and humid for half of the year here!

  16. Hi,
Can anyone advise me whether the windscreen wipers and arms on my 1997 (R plate) are the same as the mini as I'm keen to purchase a chrome set? Also, I am keen on adapting a set of rear headrests and fitting them, can anyone shine any light on how the rear headrests attach normally?
    Thanks,
    Stevie

  17. Geoff Worthing. I wonder if someone can help by telling me what the big rubber covered switch found on the chassis to the right and below the
radiator does? Is it a battery isolation switch?

Great blog full of interesting information.

    1. Bit late now but for future ref, Sainsburys will quote and have Carbodies fairway on there system but it has to be done by phone, to get internet discount get a quote for another car on net and then phone and change details. Worked for me

      Delete
  19. Got a quote from Sainsburys today - £770 fully comp with 5 years no claims. Bit steep i thought as our Impreza is only £300 odd with the same deal. Might see if a Metrocab is any cheaper to insure as we'd ideally prefer one to a Fairway.
Going to ring NFU on Monday as they don't open weekends and Adrian Flux is around the same price as Sainsburys.

Quite often, you might be likely to provide the meal for any potluck, however it doesn't imply you have to invest lots of money- there are plenty associated with excellent meals you are able to provide that not really need considerable time or even costly elements.Visit swiss alps sightseeing
