The Heater Valve
Now that the sun has finally come out the weather is noticeably warmer, I have realised that I cant turn the heater off. My chap at garage explained how it works. There is a simple lever on the heater panel on the dashboard which is operates a cable which runs through the bulkhead to a valve on a water pipe on top of the engine. 3 things seem to happen... the lever breaks ( if it has seized don't force it ), the cable seizes ( remove and lubricate or replace it ) or the valve seizes up. In my case, the valve had seized up and good soak in some WD40 seems to be bringing it back to life. I expect the cable is a bit gummed up as well. I haven't got as far as trying to remove yet, but I've got a feeling that it should be quite easy, especially if you ever had a meccano set as a child.

I have just bought a1994 Fairway and was wondering what position the Valve should be in for Winter? and also the Controls of the Cab Heater Panel as mine has been decorated with WOOD so no Idea on Hot or Cold Screen or Floor? Cheers.....Barrie
ReplyDeleteThe top slider on the dash goes from left to right - face - feet - screen. The botom slider is cold on the left and hot on the right. The heater valve under the bonnet needs to move so that the cable is shorter ie you have pulled the cable by sliding the control to the right on the dash...
ReplyDeleteAlso worth looking at is the tubes from the heater box below the dash - if they are not connected you won't get any air coming out of the demister vents.
Thanks for that also would it be worth getting a Radiator Blind and where can you buy them from as I have looked on Taxi Mart and they don't seem to stock them....Regards...Barrie
ReplyDeletei would also advise washing out the radiator by removing the drain plug at the bottom and washing out the radiatoralso the expansion bottle mine had virtually no antifreeze and in the bottom of the bottle were what can only be described as dog turds. of crud there was an unbelieveable amount of rusty sh**te in the system it now runs real cool.with pukka antifreeze etc.
ReplyDeleteI have a problem 4 - the cable has snapped internally.

Hello! I write of Spain. Recently I bought a Taxi of London Carbodies FX4R the year 1984. I am restoring it. I have verified that the system of heater was annulled. The pipe of warm water is bypassed and does not circulate water for the internal radiator. I want to put in the service again. I have returned to put a water pipe in a connector of the removed one and have returned it to the circuit for the exit. But I cannot classify the temperature and always very warm air goes out. Can someone help me? If it is necessary I can send some photo of the installation that I am doing. Thank you very much.
